American Idol: Life is Beautiful for Jason Castro

You could say Jason Castro is on top of the world, except the former American Idol finalist was relaxing on a beach in Florida when I talked to him this week, his first break in quite a while, he said.

“I can’t complain. Life is good,” said the 23-year-old singer-songwriter.

Let’s see, since he finished in fourth place on Idol’s Season 7, he has released a debut album, is planning a tour in the fall, got married and got to sing on a soap opera.

“Sons of Sylvia on tour with Carrie Underwood.” – Interview

I’ve listened to more music in 2010 than ever. I’ve heard some really good music too. I’ve liked a lot of what I’ve heard. I’m constantly being sent new music to review so a lot of times I only get to listen to an album once or twice and even if I like it, I have to move on to the next. Listening to music is a lot more work than I thought it’d be, however, when I go on a long road trip I still like to listen to music for pleasure.

I found myself popping in Sons of Sylvia’s album “Revelation.” As soon as front man Ashley Clark goes into the second chorus of “John Wayne” I’m hooked for the rest of the album. The crazy thing is I’m more of a metal head. Korn and Rob Zombie have new albums out this year, but there is something about Sons of Sylvia that I really like. I recently chatted with Ashley Clark and Adam Clark of Sons of Sylvia.

‘So You Think You Can Dance’: Wha?

I feel like I’ve been a little shortchanged over the last three Thursdays. Well, that’s not entirely true: “SYTYCD” results shows have been delivering some wonderful dance performances (and some OK musical performances), but are we ever going to get a regular elimination, one where the solos actually mean something?

The episode kicked off with a great group number to “All That Jazz” with guest choreographer Lea DeLaria. I liked the Fosse-esque moves combined with the rather grubby, old-fashioned styling and set design of the piece, along with the toned-down version of the song. The dancers reminded me a bit of scrappy street performers, in a good way, of course.

Sadly, exercise doesn’t burn enough calories to lose much weight – two miles on the treadmill equals about half of a Big Mac. But exercise is irreplaceable for a healthy heart, stamina and flexibility. That means a longer and more active lifespan.

The only way to lose weight, get fit and stay that way is the slow way – healthy diet and regular exercise. If you rush it, you will fail, and you will have only yourself to blame.

No dieting: dieting ends, a healthy diet is a lifetime of good habits. A basic healthy diet: lean meats and legumes, dark veggies, whole grains, lots of water, reduce processed carbs (soda pop is Satan!) and increase fiber. Snack on fruits and veggies instead of salt and sweets. You don’t have to count every calorie, but you should be aware of your overall intake.

It’s unrealistic to say you will never treat yourself to deliciously evil food ever again. The first time you fail becomes the excuse to quit completely. Allow yourself a moderate splurge once every two or three weeks. It’s easier to be good if you know there’s a treat in your future. Don’t buy it until you’re going to eat it – who can resist the temptation? Not me!

Exercise: start easy and work your way up. Make the time 3-4 days a week – an hour walk (your dog will love you!), a stroll on the treadmill, whatever. NO EXCUSES – it has to become a habit. After a few months start challenging yourself – add leg weights, join a gym, take dance classes, something. Add exercise to your day in small ways: take the stairs instead of the elevator, do isometrics at your desk, ride your bike to school instead of the bus. For best heart health, you need to maintain “target heart rate” (about 1.6 x resting rate) for twenty minutes.

Each body has different needs – find what works for you and stick with it. Educate yourself – anatomy and physiology is the owner’s manual for your body. There are thousands of websites with nutrition and exercise information. You can tell the good ones – they aren’t selling a quick diet fix or the Nuclear Abdominatorizer.

Don’t quit just because you fall off the wagon one or twelve times – that’s just an excuse for laziness. It took years to develop your bad habits; it will take time to change them.

Remember – your biggest obstacles are laziness and unrealistic expectations. Your best tools are perseverance and education.

Good Luck!
